Many networks are becoming more producer-oriented, which often means that the logic of a ‘global’, neoliberal art market is now infiltrating the performance ecosystems of many Southeast Asian cities. As artists, how can we resist the commodification of our works at the hands of so-called ‘creative producers’, festival directors and ‘creative industry cultural leaders’? How do we create our own networks that are less beholden to agendas around ‘cultural promotion’, ‘cultural diplomacy’ or which do not serve the tastemaking function of festival-hopping producers? This discussion, led by Alfian Sa’at from Singapore and Muhammad AB from Indonesia, will discuss platforms like the Indonesian Dramatic Reading Festival and the Asian Playwright’s Meeting which are primarily conceived of and organised by artists.
