“We are excited to the brim to welcome you back in Bangkok. Our 6th edition, the second time hosting you in the month of March, a continuation of countless friendly encounters with Southeast Asian and international peers”
In a hot, tropical weather like in Bangkok in March, we want to propose looking at performing arts as icebergs.. Deep under the perfect-looking tip, there’s a dark invisible giant chunk - a metaphor for complexity of many kinds that lie as foundations for a piece of art work. __________________ The 'tip of an iceberg' serves as a fitting metaphor as it represents the visible, seemingly perfect part of a much larger, hidden reality. This metaphor emphasizes the importance of recognizing the substantial, unseen foundations that contribute to the creation of any artistic work. The visible aspect is only a small, alluring portion of a vast and intricate whole that includes significant unseen efforts and burdens. This theme calls for an urgent awareness and responsibility towards our environment, encompassing both human and natural elements. BIPAM 2025 seeks to remind us that every artistic creation we witness is merely the tip of an iceberg, supported by complex systems of artistic processes, time, effort, relationships, communities, sociopolitical contexts, labor, and care. We must reject the simplistic, transactional, and capitalistic mindset that often surrounds the arts. Instead, we should honor the complexity, community, and processes involved, rather than reducing them to superficial numbers and pre-packaged values. Acknowledging that there is much we do not yet understand should not be seen as an obstacle, but rather as a compelling reason to celebrate and delve deeper. Would we not prefer to appreciate the entirety of the iceberg, rather than being content with a baseless ice tip floating in empty water? Let us embrace the full depth and richness of artistic creation, understanding that what we see is supported by a vast, intricate foundation.”
