As Southeast Asian countries moved towards greater regional integration, there will be increasing social and cultural interactions between the peoples of the countries. As borders open and people interact more, there is potential for both greater prosperity and peace, but also, unfortunately, for increased conflict and misunderstanding.
Events in recent years have pointed to some contradicting understandings of the past that have led to tensions between different nations. Some of these tensions can be seen as grounded in the way past events are taught in schools for the past decades and the lingering influence these lessons have on the mindsets of adults today. In order to put an end to conflicts from history egotism, the new generation must change the way they understand histories and cultures of one another, not as “we” and “others”, but as “all” who have shared issues, problems, perspectives and appreciation of the world.
For the last few years, UNESCO has been promoting the concept of “shared histories” in Southeast Asia, as one way to strengthen intercultural dialogue and a culture of peace. The concept has been disseminated through teaching in schools, as well as a range of other media such as games and web applications, exhibitions, children’s books and museum education programs.
This particular workshop is one of the collaborative experiment between BIPAM and UNESCO to present a platform for exchanges between art professionals and educators. Consisting of a curator-led tour to the RIFTS exhibition, discussions and debates, workshop participants will look into questions including “What made one become an artist?”, “The mission of art”, “Can art be regional?”, and “How should arts be taught in schools?”
ในขณะที่ประเทศต่างๆในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้เริ่มรวมตัวกันเป็นกลุ่มระดับภูมิภาค ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างคนจากแต่ละประเทศทั้งในด้านสังคมและวัฒนธรรมย่อมจะมีมากขึ้นตามไปด้วย ในสภาวะที่พรมแดนเปิด และคนสื่อสารกันมากขึ้น โอกาสของความเจริญและสันติสุขก็มากยิ่งขึ้นด้วย กระนั้น โอกาสที่เกิดความขัดแย้งผิดใจกัน ก็ปรากฏบ่อยขึ้นได้เช่นกัน
เหตุการณ์ในช่วงไม่กี่ปีที่ผ่านมาสะท้อนให้เห็นว่า ความเข้าใจประวัติศาสตร์ที่แตกต่างกัน สามารถนำไปสู่ความขัดแย้งระหว่างชนชาติต่างๆได้ ในหลายๆกรณีมีต้นเหตุมาจากวิธีการที่โรงเรียนสอนเรื่องราวในอดีต มาตลอดหลายสิบปีที่ผ่านมา ซึ่งได้สร้างกรอบความคิดให้แก่นักเรียน ซึ่งมาเป็นผู้ใหญ่ในวันนี้ ดังนั้น การจะยุติความขัดแย้งจากการถือดีทางประวัติศาสตร์ คนรุ่นใหม่จะต้องเปลี่ยนวิธีการเข้าใจประวัติศาสตร์และวัฒนธรรมของถื่นต่างๆ เปลี่ยนการมองจาก “เรา” และ “เขา” สู่การเข้าใจว่า “ทุกคน” ต่างมีปัญหา มุมมอง และความภูมิใจในโลกรอบตัวที่สอดคล้องกัน
ไม่กี่ปีที่ผ่านมา องค์การยูเนสโกได้เริ่มผลักดันแนวคิด “ประวัติศาสตร์ร่วม” ในกลุ่มชาติเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ เพื่อเป็นหนึ่งวิธีเสริมสร้างปฏิสัมพันธ์ระหว่างวัฒนธรรมและสร้างพื้นที่ให้สันติวัฒนธรรม โดยเผยแพร่ผ่านการเรียนการสอนในโรงเรียน รวมถึงสื่อรูปแบบอื่นๆ เช่น เกม แอปพลิเคชั่น นิทรรศการ หนังสือเด็ก และโครงการเพื่อการศึกษาตามพิพิธภัณฑ์
กิจกรรมในครั้งนี้เป็นการริเริ่มทดลองร่วมกันระหว่าง BIPAM และ UNESCO เพื่อสร้างพื้นที่พูดคุยแลกเปลี่ยนกันระหว่างผู้ทำงานและสอนด้านศิลปะ ในกิจกรรมมีการนำชมนิทรรศการ ปฏิบัติการศิลปะไทยร่วมสมัยใน “รอยแยก” โดยภัณฑารักษ์ การอภิปรายร่วมกัน และการโต้วาที ผู้เข้าร่วมกิจกรรมจะได้ร่วมตกตะกอนความคิดไปด้วยกันว่า อะไรทำให้คนคนหนึ่งกลายเป็นศิลปิน หน้าที่ของศิลปะคืออะไร ศิลปะเป็นสากลผัสสะของภูมิภาคได้หรือไม่ และเราควรสอนศิลปะให้เด็กรุ่นใหม่ต่อไปอย่างไร
