Translation for theatre has become an increasingly common practice in multicultural and multilingual societies. And yet translation is often perceived as a technical linguistic skill rather than an art form in its own right. What is the difference between a translation and an adaptation of a play? Should we ‘foreignise’ the translation of a play, by retaining traces of the source language, or should we ‘domesticate’ it, such that it reads ‘smoothly’ in the target language?
การแปลเพื่อละครเวทีเป็นสิ่งที่กำลังแพร่หลายในสังคมพหุภาษาและวัฒนธรรม กระนั้น การแปลมักถูกมองว่าเป็นเรื่องของทักษะทางภาษามากกว่าจะเป็นศิลปะแบบหนึ่งด้วยตัวของมันเอง มาร่วมหาคำตอบไปด้วยกันว่าอะไรคือความแตกต่างระหว่างการแปลและการดัดแปลงละครเวที ในการแปลบทละครเวที เราควรจะ “รักษาความแปลกต่าง” โดยคงร่องรอยของภาษาดั้งเดิมเอาไว้ หรือการแปลคือการ “ทำให้กลมกลืน” เพื่อให้เกิดการอ่านที่ “ลื่นไหล” ในภาษาปลายทาง
In this workshop, participants will explore various translation theories and apply them to theatre texts from Thailand. What best practices can we co-create for the translation of Thai plays for a non-Thai-speaking audience? And what are the strategies for subtitling performances such that they become integrated into the world of the play?
เวิร์คช็อปนี้จะพาผู้เข้าร่วมไปสำรวจทฤษฏีการแปลต่างๆ พร้อมทั้งการประยุกต์ทฤษฏีเข้ากับการแปลบทละครจากประเทศไทย เราต้องการหาคำตอบว่าอะไรคือการสร้างสรรค์ร่วมกันที่ดีที่สุดสำหรับการแปลบทละครไทยเพื่อคนอ่านที่ไม่สามารถอ่านภาษาได้ และอะไรคือกลยุทธ์ในการทำซับไทเทิลการแสดงเพื่อให้เกิดการผสมผสานอย่างกลมกลืนเข้าไปในโลกของบทละคร

About the Facilitator
Alfian Sa’at is the Resident Playwright of W!LD RICE, a theatre company based in Singapore. He has won the Life! Theatre Awards four times for his English-language play Landmarks: Asian Boys Vol. 2, his Malay-language plays Nadirah and Kakak Kau Punya Laki (Your Sister’s Damned Husband) and the multilingual Hotel (with Marcia Vanderstraaten). He has translated his own plays as well as the plays of Malaysian playwright Ridhwan Saidi from Malay into English. His translation of Mohamad Latiff Mohamad’s novel The Widower was nominated for the Singapore Literature Prize in 2017.
