Indonesian Dramatic Reading Festival (IDRF)
Muhammad Abe is a researcher and actor, based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Right now he is the director of Indonesia Dramatic Reading Festival (IDRF), a small theatre festival aiming to introduce new plays. He also presents his research on Indonesian modern theatre and dance history and contemporary Indonesian performing arts in Jejak Tabi Exchange (Yogyakarta, 2018; Roxas City, 2020), Asian Dramaturg Network (Yogyakarta, 2018), Indonesia National Theatre Festival (2018), Djakarta Theatre Platform (2019), and Southeast Asia panel in BIPAM (2018 & 2019). Moreover, Abe is the organizer of Asian Playwrights Meeting in Yogyakarta (2019), Festival of Indonesia Modern Plays (London, 2019), and Indonesia Dramatic Reading Festival (2018, 2019, 2020).

Indonesia Dramatic Reading Festival (IDRF) started in 2010, initiated by Gunawan Maryanto, Joned Suryatmoko, and Lusia Neti Cahyani. The festival aims to celebrate and promote new plays, to fill the lack of new plays for Indonesian modern theatre. The festival works as a platform for playwrights, actors, and directors to build a network and ecosystem in Indonesian theatre and performing arts scene, and at the same time build connection with theatre networks in Asia. For the last 10 years, IDRF has featured playwrights from Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, USA, Brazil, and more. A wide range of plays have been featured, from the conventional dramas to reading historical archives as a “play.” As a platform, IDRF organized Asia Playwrights Meeting 2019 and invited playwrights and theatremakers from Southeast Asia and Japan to meet, discuss, and enjoy the readings of their plays by Indonesian actors. As a platform, we are publishing some of the plays from the Festival, such as Di Luar 5 Orang Aktor (Outside Five Actors), 2013; New Indonesian Plays (Aurora Metro, 2019); and States of Crisis: Collection from Asia Playwrights Meeting 2019 (Kalabuku, 2020).
