The Instant Café Theatre Company
Tan Cher Kian (CK) is a Bornean Sabahan who made the leap from an oil and gas engineering sales specialist to become a theatre practitioner in 2018. He started his dalliances with stage as actor and writer due to his affinity with his mother tongue (literally) Cantonese, that led him to the evolving Singaporean work of My Grandfather’s Road by Neo Kim Seng from 2017-2019 at Centre 42 & Esplanade in Singapore.
As a start in 2018, CK produced IQ.ROCK RESTAGE (Anomalist Production) at DPAC and Stereo Genmai (Ridhwan Saidi) at Five Arts Centre. In 2019, he produced the BOH Cameronian Award-winning new Malaysian English musical, The Working Dead at KLPAC, collaborated with Moka Mocha Ink for Playlet Festival at Kongsi KL and directed Ridhwan Saidi’s Watching Satan At Work as part of Teater Modular Redux. He started his company, Siring Siring Production and produced the 2019 BMW Shorties winner, Di Sini Aku (Here I Am).
CK is currently the Producer of The Instant Café Theatre Company (ICT). He is interested in works that break down barriers yet build bridges and has a soft-spot for non-official languages (dialect).

“My Grandfather’s Road” was first presented in 2015 as an English-language monologue, a photo exhibition, and a book. It was conceived and written by Neo Kim Seng as a way of reconnecting with childhood memories of living on Neo Pee Teck Lane, which was named after his paternal grandfather. In 2017, Kim Seng revisits the text of My Grandfather’s Road, refreshing it in the spoken language of his childhood – Cantonese. He also explores Cantonese as it is spoken on both sides of the Causeway. This version of "The Vault: My Grandfather's Road" is written and performed in Malaysian Cantonese by Tan Cher Kian.

The Instant Café Theatre Company (ICT) started Parah rehearsals on Zoom with the idea of exploring a new way to bring theatre to people. We would like to create a shared experience with our audience wherever they are, watching online a play being performed LIVE by the actors.
Many of our audiences organised #ParahWatchParty among their friends and invited those who don’t have internet connection at home. Our friend organised a viewing session at an alternative learning centre for undocumented children in Semporna, Sabah with the teachers. We were encouraged by the ability to bridge geographical and time-zone distance digitally.
We managed to reach more than 1000 audience from 20 countries (excluding Malaysia) during the 2 LIVE performances via Cloud Theatre on 25th & 26th July 2020. Our audience reacted to the play LIVE via live chats and all these exchanges made up the shared LIVE experience. This short clip is a little taste of what our innovation looks like and we look forward to exploring this further with our audience.

ผู้ชมหลายท่านสร้างกลุ่มชม #ParahWatchParty กับเพื่อนๆ และชวนเพื่อนที่ไม่มีอินเตอร์เน็ตที่บ้านมาดูด้วยกัน มีเพื่อนของเราจัดให้ชมการแสดงที่ศูนย์การเรียนรู้สำหรับเด็กอพยพ ที่เซมปอร์น่า จังหวัดซาบาห์ ร่วมกับคุณครู เราต้องการให้การแสดงนี้เป็นสะพานเชื่อมพื้นที่และเวลาที่ห่างกันเข้าด้วยกัน
การแสดงนี้มีผู้ชมมากถึง 1,000 คนจาก 20 ประเทศ(ไม่รวมมาเลเซีย) ตลอดการแสดงสดทั้ง 2 รอบผ่าน Could Theatre ในวันที่ 25-26 กรกฎาคม 2020 ผู้ชมสามารถมีปฏิสัมพันธ์แบบสดๆ ได้ผ่านแชท ที่นำมาเสนอให้แก่ทุกท่านคือ คลิปการแสดงบางส่วนที่ตัดต่อเพื่อให้เห็นว่างานของเราเป็นอย่างไร และเราก็อยากสำรวจรูปแบบดังกล่าวต่อไปอีกในอนาคต
